Automating Admin: AI Accounting Software MVP
AI document extraction for small accounting firms
Story
The challenge
Earnr, a finance and tax app for sole traders and the self-employed, was developing its own AI and automation software. I had to design features that weren't technically feasible yet, for an Innovate UK project with quarterly investor presentations.
The solution
I interviewed 10 small firm accountants, led a design workshop and conceived Uploadr: a document extraction prototype that cuts admin and manual entry. Then I designed the desktop prototype and a design system to go with it. I even designed the logo.
The impact
Accountants who tested the prototype said it could speed up client registration and filing by around 50%. The project was highlighted as one of the best in its Innovate UK funding cycle.

From documents to filed return
Upload what you have and Uploadr fills in the rest, from onboarding a new client to filing their return. Clear CTAs, bold colours and larger type make it feel nothing like the old-school tools accountants are used to.
A logo, too
I designed it. I think it’s devilishly awesome.
What happened next
The hi-fi prototype and design system let Earnr begin MVP development. Earnr met all funding requirements and presented quarterly to Innovate UK thanks to my work and contributions.
The work was put forward by Innovate UK as most likely to receive future funding. These designs and IP contributed to a competitor buyout in May 2024.
This was a funded research and testing phase, not a live product launch.
